A fight with his mother took a bit of a peculiar turn for the young Andres Canto. While most teenagers would lock themselves in their room, the 20-year-old dug an underground cave in the courtyard of his parents’ property in La Romana, Alicante, as seen on Wednesday.

It all began after his mother wouldn’t let him go with his friends to the village because his clothes were dirty.

“One day I said ‘well then I’m not going out,’ and I was very angry with my clothes, and I took a hoe, and with all my rage I started digging in the ground, digging in the ground,” says Andres.

After six years that place became the entrance to a cave-house that is four metres deep (13 feet) and seven metres square (75 square feet). Over time Andres has been able to install a heating system, electrical appliances and Wi-Fi internet.

The house cave went viral after Andres shared the story of his unusual shelter on Twitter.

SOT, Andres Canto, builder and owner of the house-cave (Spanish): “Contrary to what people think, that I have been digging for 6 years, no, the first three years it was just me digging a vertical hole, one metre by one metre, here, in this area here. For the next three years, when the hole reached a certain depth it occurred to me that I could make a cave. My best friend came, saw the hole, told me that it was feasible, brought me an electric pickaxe and from there we started making the stairs and that same year we had the first small room.”

SOT, Andres Canto, builder and owner of the house-cave (Spanish): “I always went to the village with my oldest and dirtiest clothes, to play with my friends, and my mother wanted me to change, I refused and told her that I wanted to go dressed like that because I was going to get dirty anyway, and she told me that if I didn’t change I couldn’t go out”.

SOT, Andres Canto, builder and owner of the house-cave (Spanish): “So, one day I said, well, I’m not going out, I got angry with my clothes, and I took a hoe, which I don’t have here now, and with all my rage I started to hit the ground, to dig in the ground…”.

SOT, Andres Canto, builder and owner of the house-cave (Spanish): “By the stairs, we go down three and a half metres, more or less, and we arrive at a first room, tiny, everything is designed for one person, where I have all the rope of the pulley system, some pipes for the heating, which in winter help to heat the cave, and some hangers for me to leave whatever I want”.

M/S Andres describing the heating system (Spanish): “These are the heating, iron pipes and here we have 18 metres of rope for the pulleys” *UPSOUND*.

SOT, Andres Canto, builder and owner of the cave-house (Spanish): “Contrary to what many people think it is electric heating or that it goes with some kind of light, no… It consists of this iron tray, which I also made with some tubes I had, which I fill with red-hot coals, and I put it in the oven, it doesn’t give off much smoke but the heating power can last for five or six hours”.

SOT, Andres Canto, builder and owner of the cave-house (Spanish): “From that first room, we would go down here to the first little room, which was the one I was thinking of staying in, where I have a seat to rest and a music system to entertain me”.

SOT, Andres Canto, builder and owner of the cave-house (Spanish): “And from that room, I started to make my own, extending to the bottom of the cave, 4 metres deep, and there I have a single bed and some seats for three friends and more space”.

M/S Andres explains how the WIFI system works: “Here in the cave, we also have wi-fi. We share data with the mobile phone, it is placed here and it is enough to have an incredible 4G coverage, in the whole cave”. *UPSOUND*
